Hello Friends!
Welcome September. We are in the mix of things now that the school year is under way. As we begin establishing those relationships with students, so should our work with the data that gives us insights into the skills and areas of growth we can target as the year progresses.
Recently, I attended a Professional Development session in which Social and Emotional Learning was the focus, this is based on the current observations and manifestations of COVID-19 upon our school aged children. We understand that in many districts across many Southern States, education is taken more seriously by districts who are in constant competition with choice schools, but I would question the purpose of school? This is obviously a question that would require various perspectives when answered. Further, I am a firm believer that Education is the ultimately equalizer, and that with knowledge many doors are open to young people. Yet, we struggle within the literature to find educational systems who focus on the child holistically.
With this being stated, what does data, a child’s social and emotional skills tell us about our work? As educators we not only went into the teaching profession because for many it was our calling, or perhaps our lives were once forever changed by an educator. The teaching profession is facing many hurdles, shortages and now more than ever what is happening in the mix of things in schools across the country and the world matter. We need to be given the authority to be trusted as professionals to design, implement, and provide instruction to students that is meaningful, provides skills and creates people who will think and challenge the ideas and concepts before them.
Lastly, as we continue to be in the mix of things day in and day out in places where education is the way out of poverty and can open doors for tomorrow's future, we should build relationships with our students and their families. The world depends on our kindness, and empathy. And as always, we must look inward at ourselves as educators and determine how our work of heart needs to also be targeted and holistic if we are to grow and grow in our journey.
